Johanna Morrigan is going to be a writer. She doesn’t know what she will write about, but she does know that the written word is her passion. This is what our protagonist tells us in the opening of Coky Giedroyc’s How to Build a Girl, the film adaptation of Caitlin Moran’s novel of the same […]… Continue reading Beanie Feldstein is an Explosion of Charisma as the Flawed Protagonist in Delightful ‘How to Build a Girl’ — Screen Queens
Author: femalefilmfestival
The irony of this festival is that its goal is to not be around in 5 years time. To eventually not be relevant because there is zero need to have a festival geared for female talent and female stories because the stories presented in Hollywood and around the world are a balanced showcase of the human experience from both sexes.
Our goal is to achieve a lot of success and then fold into oblivion simply because there is no need for this festival.
This festival was created by the FEEDBACK Film & Writing Festival as a simple reaction to a strong need to showcase female talent from around the world in a more profound way.
When putting together the weekly festival, the administration noticed a lack of a female presence in the stories being shown at the festival.
A classic example and analogy to the frustration is how the festival noticed that even the smaller roles in a screenplay were written for a man to play. There was zero reason for this in many stories. How a police officer, or a political campaign manager, for example with 3-4 lines in a screenplay was a "HE" character. Why? And these are the screenplays written by the winners! The talented one who have obtained agents and have began/beginning their careers as a writer.
Women and the Western: in Front Of and Behind the Camera — Screen Queens
When it comes to discussion of “women in westerns”, viewers unfamiliar with the genre might struggle to name more than a handful of female characters, beyond Sharon Stone as The Lady in Sam Raimi’s cheese-fest, The Quick and the Dead, or the character of Mattie Ross in True Grit, and no female directors at all. […]… Continue reading Women and the Western: in Front Of and Behind the Camera — Screen Queens
Sex is Power in Pablo Larraín’s ‘Ema’ — Screen Queens
“Burn in order to sow again.” The opening shot of Pablo Larraín’s psycho-sexual film, Ema, shows a traffic light burning whilst the camera slowly pans out to reveal the night-time streets completely empty, safe for one woman standing there with a flamethrower watching as the fire continues to rain down upon the ground. This first […]… Continue reading Sex is Power in Pablo Larraín’s ‘Ema’ — Screen Queens

Based on the 1982 French graphic novel Le Transperceneige, 2013’s Snowpiercer followed a high-speed, non-stop train filled with the survivors of the second Ice Age which turned Earth into an uninhabitable icy wasteland. Catherine O’Hara’s Perfect Comedic Delivery in the Films of Christopher Guest — Screen Queens
Trying to define film by the a decade it premiered is a fruitless endeavour. Time can give art context, but art doesn’t derive its value from time. However, some of the best-selling and best remembered comedies of the 1990s were Austin Powers and Dumb and Dumber, and this suggests that in mainstream comedy there was […]… Continue reading Catherine O’Hara’s Perfect Comedic Delivery in the Films of Christopher Guest — Screen Queens
